Warm Almond Milk with Natural Sweetener & Extra Protein…
Warm Almond Milk? <— Um, What!?
During these winter evenings I crave something warm, cozy and sweet… but dairy milk does a number on my insides (TMI? Sorry!)… so hot chocolate with dairy isn’t my favorite go-to. Also… it tends to be loaded with refined sugars <– and I’m not into that.
In the past, and for a very LONG time… I’ve settled for nuking a glass of almond milk, adding a little maple syrup or honey… maybe some cinnamon, and then sipping on that. I’ve loved this, but I’m a hungry monster… I get the late night munchies.
It hasn’t felt ideal to eat a burger at 10 PM, and my warm almond milk is comforting… but I’m still left hungry + a little angry: so, hangry. And then I can’t sleep, it’s the worst! Literally.
I LOVE almond milk, but my only issue with it has been that the protein/ healthy fat content is low, which does not cure hunger for a long period of time.
And then one day… magical inspiration struck my Instagram in the form of a post from Simple Green Smoothies. The Simple Green Smoothie ladies have created a unicorn of a creation… aka their Spiced Almond Milk. I read the ingredients, and I noticed that a tablespoon of almond butter was included in their recipe.
^^^ Genius! Seriously, they deserve a medal or something.
I figured I could incorporate this simple scoop of almond butter as an ingredient into my warm almond milk beverage that tends to leave me slightly unsatisfied.
To say that I’m obsessed is an understatement. It’s so good + it’s filling and satisfies my hunger cravings. I’ve also tried the Spiced Almond Milk recipe from Simple Green Smoothies <—-Similar to my nightly warm almond milk with added spices (ginger, + cayenne pepper) —-> also Uh-Mazing!
Additional Bonus of Using Almond Butter
Whole, raw almonds naturally contain complete proteins, healthy fats, and other vitamins and minerals. Almond milk on the other hand is primarily composed of water… and only a few almonds + a variety of other vitamins and minerals to fortify the product.
In other words, I love adding the naturally occurring healthy proteins and fats back into this dairy alternative beverage. One of the biggest problems that many health activists have with almond milk – is that without the supplemented vitamins and minerals… the health benefits of almond milk are low.
Almond Milk as a Dairy Alternative
Almond milk isn’t the cleanest option available, but most additives are vitamins and minerals used to fortify the product.
Is it better to fulfill your daily vitamin and mineral intake from healthy foods that contain these vitamins and minerals naturally? Yes. Absolutely. Natural will always trump synthetic. <— Prepackaged anything, is usually not the best option.
But I’ve compromised here: I would like to have a warm comfort beverage on a cold wintery night, and herbal tea just isn’t going to cut it. I’m a hungry monster after all! And.. Dairy and I aren’t BFFs. So…
All things in moderation! Eat unprocessed, naturally occurring foods as often as possible. Make it part of your daily routine! And I’d give the okay to fill in the gaps wherever needed… for me that’s a dairy alternative. And whenever possible… make I make my own almond milk! — so I know exactly what’s in it.
I also love that Almond Breeze’s Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk <– My fav commercial almond milk product.. no longer contains carrageenan, an additive used to thicken many brands of almond milk, which has been linked variety of gastrointestinal problems.
That’s all for today!… Enjoy 🙂
