How To Start A Food Blog
You love to cook… and you love to share your recipes. You also love to write, and food blogging seems like the perfect thing for you!
You’ve probably thought about starting a blog, but you haven’t gotten around it yet. Maybe you’re not sure where to start…
Let me help you out! Get your website up and running fast by following these three easy steps below:
Don’t wait. Today is the day to take what you love and share it!
Note: Some of the links below are affiliate links, and I will earn a commission if you decide to make a purchase using those links. As always, I only provide links to products that I have personally used and trust.
P.S. Did you know that a major key to success is fast implementation? Take the next 15 minutes and follow the steps below. You’ll have a blogging website up and running before you know it.
…. okay okay… yes, lets get started!
1) DOMAIN NAME AND HOSTING
First you’ll need a web-host for your domain name (getting a host is basically like purchasing real estate on the internet, or a home for your blog).. I have really loved Bluehost because their rates are great and they give you a FREE domain name when you host with them.
I love free stuff!
With Bluehost you’ll just have to select a hosting plan. I recommend selecting the starter plan, which is paid in one payment instead of monthly… you pay more upfront, but you’ll save some cash in the long run.
This next part is fun!
Have you picked your domain name?
Tip on name choosing: It’s best if your name and identity is targeted to a specific audience – the more specific the better… and your domain name can help your targeted readers find you!
I selected KitchenOfEatin.com for my domain name. To help you find the perfect name, I suggest writing down your top five names and then go to Bluehost to see if your domain name is available. You can check the availability by entering your desired domain name into the box that looks like this:
Next you’ll be asked to select your package information settings. The settings I use are shown in the image below.
You don’t have to select the domain privacy protection option, but it will keep your personal contact information from being displayed publicly.
2) INSTALLING WORDPRESS
Once registration with Bluehost is complete, you’ll need to install WordPress.
WordPress is a FREE website building software. It’s the software that I’m using for this website you’re on right now – KitchenOfEatin.com. When I first discovered WordPress I was blown away at how easy it was to install on my website and how easy it is to use.
Here’s how to install WordPress on your new website:
Login to Bluehost and click the cpanel tab.
Scroll down to the Website Builders section and click on Install WordPress
Click the “Install” button on the next page.
Check the box that says “I have read the terms and conditions” and press the “Install Now button”
WordPress will then be installed to your website and a message will eventually pop up that saying, “Your Install is Complete” . Click “View Credentials”, and then either print this page or write down your WordPress access information that will be displayed. You will need this to log into WordPress and edit your website.
Click your Admin Url Link or type the Admin Url into your web browser. Then all you need to do is enter the user name and password that you saved from the previous step.
Boom! All Finished… You now own and have logged into your blog!
3) Design & Customize Your Blog
It’s starting to feel awesome and official now, right?
You’ll be posting recipes and beautiful foodie pics before you know it!
Before you get to your first post and “about you” page… you will want to design and customize your site. And to do that… you are going to need a WordPress theme.
There are many free WordPress themes to choose from. You can check out all of the free themes here. But if you’d like a premium theme (maybe even a theme designed specifically for food blogging) – This is my recommendation:
The Genesis Framework – I’m currently using this framework, and the Genesis Framework supports many amazing StudioPress Themes, including Foodie Pro, which I use.. love… and HIGHLY recommend! (If you click below to get Foodie Pro… it will come with the Genesis Framework).
You’re blog is now beautiful and official!
